Job Overview:

As our Software Engineer, your mission is to own and evolve both the mobile and web applications that power Crop Diagnostix’s diagnostics engine. You’ll work closely with the CEO (who leads product direction) and CTO (who leads backend infrastructure and ML pipelines) to deliver critical app improvements, customer-driven features, and internal tools. This is a high-impact, high-autonomy role where you will set the technical tone for frontend systems and help shape the core user experience in an emerging category.

Key Responsibilities:

In your first 30 days, you might:

• Ship 5–10 critical mobile app updates (bug fixes, UI/UX improvements) every 2 weeks based on user feedback
• Improve and stabilize the current Swift-based iOS application

By 60 days, you might:

• Lead a revamp of the mobile app using updated wireframes and customer feedback from the growing season

By 90 days, you might:

• Build our first web app, including: user account registration, insight visualization, and file upload and API integrations
• Develop internal tools such as: sample tracking dashboards, QR code scanning tools, and admin crop health insights portal

Qualifications:

• 3–7 years of software engineering experience
• Demonstrated ability to work in fast-paced, early-stage environments
• Experience with AgTech, BioTech, geospatial data, or data visualization is a bonus
• Based in or open to relocating to San Diego or Cambridge, UK (relocation support provided)
• Authorization to work in the U.S. or U.K. (we are not currently offering visa sponsorship)

Competencies:

• Startup Mentality – You’re scrappy, hands-on, and energized by fast-paced, resource-constrained environments. You move fast, learn even faster, and are comfortable wearing multiple hats.
• Mobile + Web App Experience – You’ve shipped both iOS apps (Swift/SwiftUI required) and responsive web apps using React or similar frameworks. You know how to build mobile-first, offline-capable PWAs using service workers and caching strategies. Bonus if you’ve worked with Kotlin for Android.
• Backend-as-a-Service Fluency – You’ve integrated apps with Firebase (Firestore, Auth, Cloud Functions) or Supabase, and you understand how to make the most of these platforms under real-world constraints.
• Product Intuition – You build with a user-first mindset. You can translate messy, real-world workflows into clean product flows, and you know when to ship fast vs. when to polish.
• Strategic Engineering – You write code that works today but won’t block you tomorrow. You care about performance, offline reliability, and minimizing tech debt — even under pressure.
• Clear Communicator – You’re great at explaining technical trade-offs and collaborating with teammates from all backgrounds — whether it’s engineers, designers, ops, or field staff.
